Aromatherapy Hair

Hair care products are important beauty products, which have a wide demand all over the world. Woman attach great importance for their hair care because, it plays such a vital role in their everyday life and career.  Beauty and hair care products have become indispensable in modern society.

Many Aromatherapy clinics have their own proprietary formulations and treat various types of hair problems such as hair loss, receding hair, dandruff and certain dermatological problems.  One of the reasons for hair loss is regular use of shampoo, and other hair products made out of synthetic materials.  The function of a shampoo is to cleanse the hair from dirt, soil and foreign substances. But modern shampoo use detergent bases such as Sodium lauryl sulphate and a host of other chemicals to go with it. These chemicals cause irritation to the scalp and slowly erode   the amino acids and proteins that are responsible for the sheen of healthy hair.  Over a period of time, hair loses its lustre and sheen, and becomes dull and weak.   In order to counter this problem, another formulation is introduced called “conditioner” which is supposed to restore the lost components in the hair. But, in reality, these products offer only a cosmetic value.

Aromatherapy hair care products offer the best alternative for these products. For examples, a combination of dried Henna powder and vegetable oil based soaps offer best results.  It not only cleanses the hair but conditions the hair. Small quantities of an essential oil such as Lavender or Rosemary mixed with Jojoba oil base, is an ideal Aromatherapy product for hair care. The base oil such as Coconut oil and Olive oils are used along with essential oils for Aromatherapy hair products.

Essential oils such as Teatree oil exhibits antibacterial properties and are used in hair care products to prevent dandruff and lice. A hair care product formulated with essential oils and vegetable oils do not have any side effects. This is critically important for any Aromatherapy product formulation.

Aloe Vera is another important hair care product. It is a natural moisturiser and hair conditioner.  An Aromatherapy hair product can be formulated by blending Henna with stabilised Aloe Vera gel and scented with Lavender oils for an excellent result.  It is a good anti- dandruff agent and prevents hair loss effectively.

Bath Oil

Japanese have been traditionally using hot springs, and it is part of the Japanese culture to entertain guests by offering them a hot spring bath. They spend hours in hot springs, especially in mountain areas.  Most of these mountains are volcanic and one can see a number of such springs, all over Japan.  Aromatherapy has been used in Japan for several decades.

In Aromatherapy, bath oils are prepared by blending a small percentage of essential oil with base oil and mixed in baths.  The selection of a particular essential oil is very important and it depends on the purpose of such a therapy.  Some essential oils have therapeutic value and acts as a muscle relaxant.  The combination of a mild frangrance, hot steam and base oil with emollients, offers a soothing and mentally relaxing experience.  It leaves the skin supple and smooth, unlike a normal bath with synthetic soaps.

Preparing bath oil requires knowledge and skill. It requires right proportion of base oil and essential oil, and may involve one or more combination of oils, to get the right fragrance.  This combination depends upon the kind of mood and relaxation, one can expect out of the bathing experience.  Most of the base oil as well as essential oils are immiscible in water.  One should take into account the volatile nature of essential oil while mixing in a steam spa, because many oils are steam volatile, prepared by steam distillation.  Such knowledge of essential oils will be advantageous in preparing bath oil.

Aroma therapists make different claims with their bath oil preparations but the most common claims are, relaxation, inner peace and well-being and even spiritual experience and awakeing.  However it has been accepted that essential oils in the bath oil preparation stimulate one’s pleasant memories, and offers a deep sense of relaxation.  It rejuvenates and calms down one’s mind.  After a long day of hard work, a hot bath certainly helps to relax the muscles, and the pleasant fragrance of the essential oil with its medicinal properties, enhances such healing process.

The selection of base oil is of paramount importance because in the bath it should not form a separate layer and deposit on the skin, effectively blocking the pores of the skin.  Such formulation will be counter- productive.  The base oil should be made completely miscible with water using a natural vehicle.  Even the quality of bath water is equally important.  Certain natural zeolite materials will help soften the water and make it ideal for blending bath oil.  A successful formulation of “bath oil or bath oils” is a combination of the quality of water, fragrance of natural essential oils, natural base oil and the temperature of the bath.
