Natural Aromatherapy

Natural Aromatherapy is a therapy, which is used to treat certain physical and psychological problems, using one hundred percent natural materials.  These natural materials are basically essential oils derived from plants and flowers.  Certain plants have aromatic components in their leaves, barks, pods, and flowers.  These aromatic materials can be classified by their distinct fragrances and chemical molecular structures of their active ingredients.

Some of these components can also be synthetically produced if the demand is high and the natural sources do not meet the demand.  However, in Aromatherapy only natural essential oils are used.

Aromatherapy can be applied by simple massaging, using specially formulated massaging oils, which relieves muscular pain, and refreshes the mind.  Both, body and mind are treated simultaneously, with simple and gentle massaging.

Since essential oils are highly concentrated products, they need to be diluted in a suitable natural solvent or carrier.  Base oil such as olive or coconut oil is widely used of this purpose.  Essential oils such as “Oil of Wintergreen” are used.  Terpenese, such as turpentine has been used for treating muscular twists and pains.  Oil of winter green is an essential oil obtained by steam distillation of certain plant leaves.  It is commonly used in formulating many pain balms.  It is also used to treat common cold and flu.  They are mixed in boiling water and the vapour is inhaled.

Natural Aromatherapy can also be applied by mixing certain essential oils in a hot water bathing tub or steam Spa.  Aromatherapy bathing oils are specially formulated for this purpose.  The bath oil uses base oil along with essential oils in order to reduce the concentration of essential to the minimum.  Various essential oils are obtained by using various methods such as solvent extraction, simple distillation, steam distillation, and supercritical extraction using inert solvents such as liquid carbondioxide.

These techniques are used based on the type of essential oil.  For example sandalwood oil is obtained from steam distillation of Sandalwood chips.  Similarly Tuberose is treated with a solvent and extracted in the form of ‘Tuberose concrete’.  This waxy material is further treated with absolute alcohol to obtain Tuberose absolute.  These are very exotic essential oils, which fetch the highest price in the international market.  They are also used, as a base in formulating high-end perfumes.

Though, extraction of these natural aromatic materials is a science, formulating a suitable end product to be used in Aromatherapy, is an art.  Natual Aromatherapy has been accepted as a complimentary medical treatment to mainstream therapies.  Many universities are conducting fulltime courses and offering certificates.  People should consult and get treatment from properly trained Aroma therapist for better results.  A variety of Natural Aromatherapy products are sold in the market, and through online shopping, in a wide range of compositions and prices.  The buyers of such products should read the content and the active ingredients used, the methods of application and usage for better results.
